Never wore any protective anything as a kid skating. Bounced better. Immature frontal lobe. Now I'm all geeked out from head to knees.

Tried on a set of trad skate pads. The hard plastic cased style. Too bulky. So went with a set of mtn biking pads. iXS brand with their version of a 3Do soft pad. Seem to work fine. Couple hard ejections resulting in the need to tuck and roll. Not sure if my knees or elbows even touched the surface. Helmet ended up with a few pock marks from the gravel and backpack was totally covered in dirt and dust. Not sure how effective these pads will be in the running bail out into a potential face plant. Normally would just drop down to a knee slide. But only a kevlar material vs. smooth and slippery hard plastic. Thinking the pads will probably just bite instead of slide.

Benefits of this style of pad. You can wear them under a pair of regular pants and loose fitting shirt. They breath well. Total full range of unrestricted movement. You don't really feel like your are wearing pads. 3DO tech available in a large number of different brands of established companies catering the mtn biking and road motor cycle users. Chances are like seatbelts in vehicles you will rarely need. But when you do.....
