Speed changing lag caused broken ankle

Just get my board in the mail after waiting 2 months for it to arrive in NZ. Cruse in slow. Stop. Then eco. And as per the user manual tryed changing up to fast while moving. Only at anout 15-20km. Nothing happens and the board stopped working then all of a sudden it bangs on full power off up the road and I am left behind with a broken ankle and broken confidence to get back on.
Im a very experienced skateboarder and this remote issue people keep having is not good.
Not sure how to safely test if the remote is no good or that is a normal laggy response from evolve?
Should I not change speeds while moving when I can walk again?

Sorry to hear mate, hope you make a full recovery soon :worried: To change speeds whilst moving you have to let go of the trigger then press the button to change, then reapply the acceleration.

    Heres to a speedy recovery.
In Fast and GT mode eaze on the throttle till you get a feel for the torque. I rarely ride in GT mode.

You can change speeds while moving. However what you must do is to allow the trigger to go back into the neutral position first, then hit the right button to allow the remote to go into the next mode such as FAST in your case, then apply the throttle again. One thing to note from my experience, you always have to verify on the remote LCD screen that you successfully and the board successfully managed to go up a mode. However this is not guaranteed on the board's end, it can be in a mode still one or more behind what the remote says due to RF interference between the remote and board.

Shifting while still in any partial or full throttle position is not supported, so your on your own there if you choose to go that route.

Can you elaborate more on how you made your shift?

Yea I gess I was on the trigger assuming it would smoothly change up. Not pause then go back on to next speed. They should have used a trigger like a battery drill thats more stiff and strong feeling through the variable speeds.

Anyway. As soon as I heal ill be back on.
    Cheers all

Ok, thanks for clarifying. I agree, if you do that type of shift without letting up on the remote trigger that you can get jolted unexpectedly.

Get better and hope you can get back up on your board again!

    Hey Daryl, hope you recover soon so you can get back on your board! I think I may have had the same problem as you and it also caused me to wipe out, I should mention I have the Bamboo GT though. Fortunately I only experienced some road rash and a few bruises but here's what happened to the best of my recollection;

I was cruising along yesterday in ECO, I wanted to kick it up to FAST so I pushed the button once, no response, I let go of the trigger (figured that out the other day) pushed the button again, wouldn't change, I press it again and notice the board's battery indicator has dashes no percentage like usual and while looking suddenly the board takes off faster than anything even GT mode is capable of, caused speed wobble and I went down. Note I did not have my finger on the remote trigger at all when this happened, I was coasting and it went off completely on its own!

Thankfully I only experienced minor injuries, broken cell phone, broken sunglasses, shredded my jeans and scratched my watch (which I shouldn't have been wearing) but I'll be calling Evolve tomorrow am about this incident. Anyone else having this issue?

Crazy things can happen when the remote is dropping out, which when you see the dashes is a sign of. When you see any dashes / lost of battery % you need to get off the board immediately if you want to be entirely safe. Then do the repairing process shutting things down and powering them back up until you get your battery % again. Reason being is that I found that when the board gets hit with RF interference the speed modes can get queued up and once it connects it will process it all at once, I ended up having the board throw itself into reverse due to that while moving forward since I was downshifting and had no response with the board/remote regard to my input.

As for the board taking off while in neutral, that's an interesting one. I had my board have interference and then out of nowhere, it took off full speed in GT mode from cruising at 7mph. That's the incident where I dislocated my shoulder. What I figured happened there was that I was getting some interference, and with that, slowly and unknowingly adding more trigger. But since it was disconnecting from the interference, the board wasn't getting the input from the remote, then most likely adding more trigger. Then once the remote/board connects, its full speed ahead. But in all honestly I thought I had the remote trigger in the same cruising 7mph position. It felt like out of nowhere as if someone else hacked into my board and floored it.

I think what you're describing is exactly what happened. Seems that it probably had a bunch of commands in cue (such as acceleration from me probably pulling the trigger a few times while it showed dashes) so when it did finally resync with the board, that caused it to take off. I'm reading some of you other thread where you talk in depth about the remote, did having them send you a new remote solve this issue for you? Thanks a lot!!

No, swapping the remote didn't help. The board went back to Evolve and they said "they couldn't reproduce" the issue. But they replaced the motor controller. The trigger / remote was smoother, but the drop-outs were still there and the remote would still get choppy / unpredictable. I put too much trust in the board thinking they did fix it after the motor controller was replaced and that's when the board ended up in reverse while I was moving forward. But now I just am prepared that the board will act up and stay very focused on the remote LCD and look for those dashes. Also if you feel the throttle become 'mushy' in feeling, you pull the trigger to accelerate and its not taking off its another sign of a dropout. And again best to get off the board and re-pair the remote to the board.

Through all my posts here and emailing Evolve over and over of the issues I was having with my Carbon GT, Alex from Evolve USA got back to me and apologized about how the board was acting up. He said the board should not be acting that way, so make sure you push them about your incident. He also noted that they get boards from customers that say they have issues, they ride the piss out of them for 20 minutes and can't reproduce the issue. I told him that's what they did to me with my board and that the RF interference is very indicative to the environment that the user is in, that they may not and never reproduce it unless they are in that particular setting and area. He understood and also indicated to me that I do understand this stuff, since I work in the high tech industry. Alex came back asking what I wanted to do, either to get a full refund or another Carbon GT. I emailed him saying I want to go for another Carbon GT, that since he said the defect count is low, that chances is that I'll get a fully functioning board that's better than the one I have.

Hey guys if you see unusual things happening to your remote display like battery % disappearing. connection disappearing or jumping modes or not. STOP get of the board and resync the remote to the board.

Falling off hurts. Don't push your luck

Rough. I've been skating for 21 years never broken anything. Sucks but if your experienced you know how to get back on.

My sympathy for your ankle !! after that wait for delivery that is awful.....

What I have always done is use the gear change button to change mode - i.e. up to fast - but after pressing I release the throttle, view the screen - confirm fast is the mode then slowly engage throttle again. Always only a single press - if anything seems out the expected, stop.

Same for up and down gears - never had an issue. I might be lucky with a good remote and motor controller I realise - however the concept of caution and precaution is important - especially at the speeds these boards are capable of.

Also always be aware that command can be queued if the remote losses connection - never use multiple button presses out of frustration, once they kick in you can get a surprise and rarely good :S

Easy to say I know, but must be emphasised for new users big time !!...hope your recover is quick

I don't touch the buttons whilst moving. Start in fast and keep it there. If I do change it's stop and off the board. Pain in the butt? Yes. But I got no time for silly accidents.
