Best action cams for recording footage these days?

    What are the options?

I've never had a GoPro or anything like that, and I'm a bit hesitant using my shiny iPhone when on a board.

I know GoPro are the market leaders and all that, so feel free to let me know what's good that they have out at the mo. But are there any other good competitors too?

I hear theres some decent much cheaper alternatives.

I'm not looking for top of the line, good value is what I'm after, but something I won't smash easily if I fall and can do decent 1080p footage. I'm thinking one of the square style ones I can put in a gimbal.

    Thanks

These are fantastic for the money, they fit in standard gopro everything (basically a copy) and they shoot good footage. I've got one and no complaints - even their app is surprising good - real time connection and viewfinder from your phone. They are also on special at the moment YI Action Camera

Nice! Looks pretty good in specs!

Just the kind of thing I was looking for.

Got any footage from it I can check out?

How does it do the realtime connection to your phone when away from home, bluetooth?

Here's a review with videos comparing it to a gopro

I also have a Yi 4K, perfect for a backup or B cam (for footage where microphone feed is not critical as the quality is not so good especially in the waterproof housing)
For me it's better image wise than GoPro 4 Silver (that I also own) and has a better user interface.
The GoPro 5 supposedly has it beat, mine is on order.

What did you pay for the Yi 4K and from were? - it does seem good - that video review above was positive - be nice to have the touch screen - I have an older GoPro.

"Ohh, a review of the camera I'm after!"

I got mine from a local retailer that I trust. should be around USD 199. Amazon is a safe bet (the official USA dealer for Yi). Some versions out there are also Chinese and cannot be changed to English by my understanding so watch where you buy it.

Not a bad little vid covering the rise and fall of GoPro and a bit of info about the recent drone debacle
